Whether seeking our services in the midst of a crisis or through planned treatment, all patients receive compassionate care that fits their needs. We provide treatment and services to adult patients (those 18 years of age and older) who have a psychiatric or substance abuse diagnosis, or dual diagnoses (both mental health diagnosis and addiction).

Inpatient chemical dependency (patient care unit 2700):
- Sundays: 1 to 3 pm & 6 to 8 pm
Up to 2 adult family members are permitted to visit at the same time. Visits for children/adolescents (those under 18) may be arranged if approved by a counselor.
Inpatient mental health (patient care units 4500 & 5500):
- Daily: 7 to 8 pm
- Weekends & holidays: 10:30 to 11:30 am & 7 to 8 pm
Visitors must be 18 years of age or older.
Inpatient geriatric mental health (patient care unit 2600)
- Monday - Friday: 12 to 1 pm & 5 to 6 pm
- Weekends & holidays: 12 to 4 pm
Up to 2 adult visitors (at least 18 years old) are permitted to visit at the same time.
Inpatient Mental Health Care
St. Joseph’s Hospital in St. Paul offers inpatient care for adults with serious mental health conditions. Patients receive psychiatric and psychological evaluation, medication management, individual and group therapy, and care management to promote an easy transition back to mental health support in the community.
Geriatric Mental Health Unit
Our separate geriatric area has 12 private rooms. Rooms are designed with large windows, calming lighting and colors to promote a less distracting space. Our patients receive a separate and structured program that includes:
- Geriatric psychiatric care with special medication management
- Individual and group therapy sessions depending on the patient's mental health condition
- Depression therapy focusing on grief and loss common with older adults
- Activity therapies involving chair exercises, movement and music based on mobility, hearing and other physical abilities
- Faith-based spiritual care
- Age-specific nutrition attention
Outpatient Mental Health Clinics
Our Outpatient Mental Health Clinics provide a range of individualized services at St. Joseph's and St. John's hospitals, including:
- Psychological testing
- Medication management
- Individual and group psychotherapy
Our supportive care team includes psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, psychologists, psychotherapists and nurses.
In our outpatient clinics we specialize in treating adults with mental health/emotional disorders and chemical use disorders. We also provide care for those with serious and persistent mental illness, patients who suffer from past trauma or PTSD diagnoses, and patients with dual diagnoses (mental illness and addiction).
