Criteria for Surgery

We want to give you the best chance for a healthier life. If you are thinking about having weight loss surgery through HealthEast Bariatric Care, you need to:

  • Be at least 100 pounds above your ideal weight or have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more OR

  • Have a BMI of between 35 and 39.9 with serious health problems that may be improved with surgery. Calculate your BMI here.

  • Have participated in structured weight loss programs and be able to provide documentation.

  • Be healthy enough to have surgery.

  • Stop smoking.

  • Be well informed about the surgery, including risks, benefits, uncertainties and post-operative expectations, anticipated and expected lifestyle changes.

  • Have strong family support.

  • Be psychologically stable.

  • Be cancer-free for five years or more.

  • Be committed to a healthy lifestyle for the rest of your life.

  • Agree to be part of long-term follow up.

  • Not become pregnant or desire pregnancy for two years after surgery.

  • Understand that weight loss surgery is only a tool.
