About us
St. Joseph's Hospital in downtown St. Paul is proud to hold the distinction as Minnesota's first hospital. It was founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1853, in response to a cholera epidemic that was sweeping St. Paul.
Although much has changed in health care since the hospital's early days, the practice of providing high quality, compassionate care remains constant. From technology to education, family support and spirituality to community outreach, our commitment ensures you’ll always receive high quality, compassionate care.
Today, St. Joseph's houses a comprehensive range of specialty programs, including:

- HealthEast Bariatric Care
- HealthEast Heart Care
- HealthEast Kidney Stone Institute
- National Brain Aneurysm Center
The hospital is a member of the University of Minnesota's Family Medicine and Community Health residency program and is Medicare certified.
St. Joseph's Hospital is a member of HealthEast Care System. HealthEast serves the Twin Cities' East Metro and surrounding communities through hospitals, clinics, outpatient services, rehabilitation care and transportation.
About our expansion
Our expansion added a new five-story patient tower on our current campus. The new de Paul tower houses centralized Heart Care and neurovascular services, an outpatient surgery and imaging center, a new chapel and lobby, and the 3M Education Center. With the expansion, all patient rooms at St. Joseph's became private rooms. Learn more.
