Rehabilitation Care at Bethesda Hospital provides intense rehabilitation in a hospital setting.

Patients have physical disabilities stemming from:

  • Stroke
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Major multiple trauma
  • Brain injury
  • Multiple fractures
  • Amputation
  • Neurological disease, such as Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis or Guillain-Barre
  • Others

Patient involvement

Because motivation and effort are key to recovery and growth, Rehabilitation Care emphasizes patient involvement in:

  • Intensive physical, occupational and speech therapy
  • Therapeutic recreation
  • Community integration activities

Progress is gauged through Functional Independence Measurements (FIMs). The FIMs rate ability on 18 activities of daily living, such as dressing and grooming, mobility and transfers, problem-solving, bowel and bladder control and adjustment to limitations.

The Rehabilitation Care Team sees each patient as an individual with unique concerns and goals. The care team meets every other week with the family to review progress, answer questions and discuss options for discharge, which may be to home, to an assisted living setting in the community, or to a skilled nursing facility.

Assistive technology

When needed, assistive technology may be used to help develop communication skills. Computers, telephones and other devices have been modified so that they can be operated by a single switch or adapted mouse.
