Tom’s Story

Tom was treated with the da Vinci® Surgical System

Tom, a professor of theology, was diagnosed with prostate cancer at the age of 58. With his PSA levels high for his age and rising, a biopsy was done. The news of cancer shocked Tom.

Tom had been an orderly at an orthopedic and urology hospital when he was in school. He had been around procedures and men who were recovering, and knew what he didn't want. "I looked at radiation, hormonal treatments and cryotherapy, but I decided that these weren't for me," Tom said.

Tom's research and experience led him to the da Vinci Surgical System at St. John's Hospital for two reasons. "My sister-in-law's friend, who happens to be a cancer doctor around my age, had his prostate removed. He told me how important it is for someone my age to have the prostate removed," recalled Tom. "And secondly, a friend of mine from Bible study works at St. John's Hospital and told me to look at the new prostate procedure, the da Vinci."

After doing research and talking to people, Tom decided that the da Vinci was the right choice for him. He was able to schedule surgery around his class schedule, which was very important to him.

For four weeks before the surgery, Tom walked six miles, four times a week to lose weight to prepare for surgery.

The surgery day came and went, and "the procedure was smooth and slick," Tom says. "In terms of pain, there was none. I was weak, but I did not hurt at all." Tom took his time and took the recovery slow.

When Tom was asked about the care he received from HealthEast he replied, "It was wonderful. The care itself was very good."

A year has passed since Tom's diagnosis, and Tom would like to share that "there is life on the other side." Tom also advised, "Do whatever you can to help yourself."
