Craig’s Story

Craig was treated using the da Vinci® Surgical System

At age 58, Craig was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Through a routine physical, doctors found he had an elevated PSA (prostate specific antigen) and recommended that he have a biopsy. "When I was told there was a chance I had prostate cancer, I wanted to know right away. I was shocked to find out I had cancer."

As he researched the available treatment options, Craig became more hopeful about his prognosis. He was in the early stages of prostate cancer and there were many treatment options available. Craig decided on the da Vinci® Surgical System after his doctor described the procedure and ensured him that he was a good candidate. Craig says, "I looked at the pros and cons of the da Vinci and I didn't see many cons. So I said, 'sign me up''"

Craig's procedure took three hours. Afterwards, "The pain wasn't really that bad at all," he says. He was home from work for three weeks and "was feeling so good that I started to get bored and wanted to get back to work."

Though the procedure went well and was not painful, Craig did experience some side effects. "There are two main side effects that troubled me. One was incontinence," Craig explains. "I had to wear pads off and on. Today, I don't wear them at all."

"My biggest disappointment is erectile dysfunction," Craig revealed, "I am still not able to have an erection without medication. This has been the biggest change. With my prescription, I am able to have intercourse, but it is not like it used to be."

Aside from these side effects, Craig was pleased with the procedure and the care he received. "I would recommend my physician and St John's Hospital to anyone," Craig said.

Craig offers this advice to those recently diagnosed with prostate cancer:

"I know it can be a hard decision (the treatment option), so do your research and take your time. And keep getting your PSA tested while you are deciding!"
