Hip & Knee Replacement

Preparing for joint replacement surgery

When you need surgery, we provide education, support and care for a quick recovery. Your input is important and we encourage you to be involved in your care both before and after surgery.

During a hip or knee replacement procedure, the surgeon removes the damaged cartilage and bone and places new metal, ceramic or plastic joint surfaces to restore alignment and function of the joint.

If you are preparing for hip or knee replacement surgery, you are expected to attend a free, comprehensive pre-surgery class to prepare for surgery and your recovery and rehabilitation at home. Research has shown that education and preparation on the part of the patient leads to better outcomes after surgery. We highly recommended that you attend a class in person. However, if you are unable to do so, an online class is available.

Joint Camp and Joint Journey

Most orthopaedic patients are different from other hospital patients. They aren't sick; they just have a bad hip or knee.

Our Joint Camp and Joint Journey programs focus on the unique needs of orthopaedic patients. You'll even wear your own exercise clothes instead of a hospital gown.

Both programs:

  • Have proven results
  • Help you smoothly progress from surgery to recovery
  • Emphasize wellness
  • Involve rehabilitation exercises
  • Engage family and friends
  • Get high scores from past patients

These interactive therapy sessions help you return to your active lifestyle as quickly as possible by providing you with information and support from the time your surgery is scheduled through the weeks and months following discharge from the hospital. These programs focus on returning you home following a one- to three-day hospital stay. You'll be encouraged to follow an exercise and mobility training plan after surgery.

Joint Camp is offered at the Orthopaedic Specialty Center located at Woodwinds Health Campus. Joint Journey is offered at St. Joseph's Hospital.

HealthEast Joint Replacement Registry

HealthEast has been nationally recognized for its research in orthopaedics. Our community-based hip and knee implant registry was the first in the country. Beginning in 1991 and continuing today, HealthEast has recorded more than 30,000 orthopaedic procedures. HealthEast's orthopaedic surgeons publish and present their registry research data nationally. This ultimately helps improve treatment and recovery for our patients. Learn more about HealthEast's Joint Replacement Registry.

Advanced certified nurses

Our Orthopaedic Care nurses are specially trained to take care of you during and after joint replacement surgery; this includes nurses in the operating room as well as on the orthopaedic inpatient unit. These dedicated nurses are committed to your care and work with you to monitor your progress, assess your responses to treatment, control your pain, and help you meet your individual goals for recovery.

Many of our nurses have achieved additional orthopaedic specialty credentials, such as:

  • Orthopaedic Nurse Certification (ONC) from the National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses
  • Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR) from American Organization of periOperative Nurses

The ultimate goal of certification is to create a culture of patient safety and extraordinary care through increased knowledge and a professional commitment to the highest practice standards. Certification benefits the entire health care community, from the patient to the nurse to the employer and hospital administrator.
