How do I know if I am on the right diabetes medication?

We are fortunate to have many medications available to help control blood sugar. There is not a right or wrong in terms of which medication or combination of medications is the best. Expert panels have suggested we use the older, more proven and less expensive medications first and then add to them or change them if they are not effective in controlling the blood sugar.

Ultimately, the best medications are those that one can tolerate without side effects and that control the blood sugar. If you feel well and the Hgb A1c (Estimated Average Glucose) is less than 7.0%, then your medication is likely correct. If you do not feel well or the A1c is over 7.0%, the medication should be re-evaluated.

Remember that lifestyle (diet and activity) are important in controlling blood sugar and may need re-evaluation too if the A1c is 7.0%.
