The Dragon Divas are an eclectic mix of thriving women of all ages: moms, daughters, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, homemakers, scientists, educators, business professionals, health care providers, volunteers and advocates. The Divas are the first known dragon boat team for breast cancer survivors in the Twin Cities.
Throughout the summer, we'll share info on training, races and camaraderie of the team. Check back for regular updates and some photos.
The Dragon Divas would like to thank HealthEast Cancer Care for their generous contribution to this paddling season!
The Dragon Diva mission is to provide an opportunity for all members of the team to improve their health and fitness, to connect with other survivors and to inspire our community to engage in an active lifestyle regardless of the challenges we face.
The Divas:
The Divas currently rent a boat and keep it moored at a team member's home on White Bear Lake in the Twin Cities.
The beauty of dragon boat racing has been an honored tradition in Chinese communities for more than 2,000 years. The dragon symbolizes protection from evil and disease and a way to find peace in life. Dragon boat racing became an inspiration for breast cancer survivors through the courageous work of a group of survivors in Vancouver who used this ancient sport to prove that they could participate in a vigorous exercise without adverse effects.
A dragon boat is a 40-foot, canoe-like vessel made from wood and fiberglass with a colorful dragon's head on the front. A large drum is nestled inside the craft, immediately behind the dragon's head. A drummer beats out the cadence of the race for the 16-24 paddlers on board. The sterns person keeps the boat and crew on course. Races average 500 meters and can have between four and ten boats.
Through the generosity of donors and sponsors, we hope to be able to continue renting the boat on a yearly basis and to participate in dragon boat festivals each summer.
