RN Scheduling Options

Bethesda, St. John’s and St. Joseph’s hospitals offer a variety of scheduling options for registered nurses. Our goal is to be flexible and creative in meeting patient and staff needs. Not all of these options are available on every unit, but HealthEast is willing to explore if there is an interest.

Nurse scheduling

  • We offer both block and variable scheduling depending on the needs of the unit and position of the nurse.

Flexible work schedules

  • We offer a work schedule that involves working 12-hour shifts every third weekend.
  • Work schedules may be a combination of eight and 12 hour shifts. Some units may offer a 10-hour shift.
  • Depending on your area of interest, alternative start times may be offered.

Every weekend plan with benefit option (EWP)

  • This is a pattern of working every weekend.
  • These nurses receive a higher rate of pay.
  • These nurses have the option of having every sixth weekend off by using paid time off, unpaid time off or working two other days in the two-week pay period.

Flexible schedule plan in lieu of benefts (FSP)

  • These nurses work without benefits at a higher rate of pay to supplement
full-time, part-time and casual staff as needed.
  • These nurses must pre-schedule six evening or night shifts for every
four-week schedule. Two of these shifts must be on the weekend.
  • The length of the shift may vary depending on the unit’s needs.

Casual status

  • A casual nurse is used to supplement regularly scheduled staff. A casual nurse shall be called or scheduled to work in a manner mutually agreeable between the nurse and the hospital.
  • The nurse shall be required to work two shifts in a four-week schedule, one of which must be a weekend or off shift.

HealthEast Float Pool

  • Nurses have the opportunity to float between St. John’s, St. Joseph’s and Bethesda hospitals.
  • Nurses may be scheduled eight-hour shifts while working every third weekend.
  • Nurses are required to work only one holiday per year. Every other year that holiday must be Thanksgiving or Christmas.

Shared positions

  • Two benefit-eligible nurses work together to share one full-time position.
  • One benefit-eligible nurse works one position shared between two sites (same specialty).
  • One benefit-eligible nurse partners with a casual nurse covering the benefit-eligible nurse’s non-productive time so there is always coverage.
