Nursing Intern Program

HealthEast offers a 10-week nursing intern program to practice skills and work with a preceptor. The program emphasizes critical thinking, leadership, prioritization, organization, time management, assessments, communication and accountability. College credits are given for the completion of the program.

Internships are offered at these HealthEast facilities:

Nursing interns are paired with a nurse preceptor and have the same schedule and patient assignments as the preceptor. Interns are required to complete program activities such as journals with specific objectives. Instructors have contact with both the nursing intern and the preceptor.

Areas nursing interns work in include:

  • Orthopaedics
  • Pediatrics
  • Oncology
  • Obstetrics
  • Medical/surgical

Dates to remember

  • The application deadline is December 14, 2007. We will contact you by e-mail to let you know whether or not you are being considered for an internship position. Official transcripts can be sent after this time.

  • After December 14, we will be calling applicants who are under consideration to set up telephone screens.

  • Interviews will be conducted later in December and January and offers will be made the week of February 15, 2008.

  • Acceptance needs to be confirmed by February 22, 2008.

  • The nursing intern program will run from June 2 through August 8, 2008.

Orientation is a three-week program and is required. Attendance and participation for the entire schedule is mandatory.

Requirements

To be considered, you must:

  • Be enrolled in a nursing intern course at a Minnesota college
  • Be enrolled in a BSN/BAN program
  • Submit an online profile.

How do I set up an online profile?

  • Go to Search Careers
  • Click the login button
  • Sign in as a new or registered user
  • Under Career Interest select RN-Registered Nurse
  • Under Area of Specific Interest select Intern
  • All of nursing student internship positions are .8 (64 hours every two weeks) so indicate part-time under Position Status
  • Under Preferred Locations select which hospitals you would consider for your internships (St Joseph’s, Bethesda, St. John’s or Woodwinds)

In the Education Information section:

  • Under Highest Level of Related Education indicate the nursing program that you are currently enrolled in. For example, if you are in an Associates Degree program, select Associate's Degree. If you are in a post Baccalaureate RN program, select Bachelor's Degree.
  • On the right side under Name of Institution enter the nursing school you are currently attending.
  • Under Did you Graduate?, select In Process
  • Under Anticipated Completion Date enter the month and year you will graduate. The system also requires a day, so if you do not know what day you will graduate enter any day (it does not matter).
  • Complete the rest of the profile questionnaire and follow the directions to submit it.

How do I find nursing internship positions at HealthEast?

On the Career Search page, search by keywords “nursing intern.”  If you find a position you’re interested in, set up a profile and apply online.

If I have applied already. Should I apply online, too?

Yes, but you will not need to resubmit your letters of reference.

How many positions can I apply for?

We ask that you apply to no more than three positions at a time. If you receive a notice from HealthEast that you are no longer being considered for a position, you are welcome to apply for an additional position at that time.

I would consider all nursing internship openings.
Should I apply to all of them?

No. It is best to apply for specific job openings. If you complete a profile and do not apply to a specific posted position, you will be considered a "spontaneous applicant."  In this case, your application may not be reviewed for all possible positions.

What can I expect after submitting my application?
How do I submit my references and transcripts?

You will be notified by e-mail when your application is being reviewed.

If you are being considered for a position, you will receive an e-mail from a recruiter with an attached document, requesting two letters of reference. This e-mail can be forwarded to those completing your references.

References should come from either two nursing instructors or one from an instructor and one from an employer.

How many interns do you plan to hire for 2008?

We are in the process of determining this. In 2007 we hired 19 nursing student interns.
