Lymphedema services

A small number of women experience lymphedema after surgery for breast cancer. Lymphedema occurs when lymph fluid backs up in a limb. HealthEast Optimum Rehabilitation has certified lymphedema therapists on staff. A doctor's referral is needed for treatment.

Integrative therapies

Integrative therapies are designed to complement your medical care. They are also known as healing arts therapies, complementary medicine or complementary therapies.

Healing touch

Healing touch, Reiki and therapeutic touch are three common forms of energy-based therapies. These non-invasive techniques use the hands to clear, energize and balance the human and environmental energy fields. When you are experiencing stress and discomfort during your breast cancer journey, healing touch therapy may bring a sense of well being, relaxation and relief from symptoms. Healing Touch is based on the belief that each person has an energy field in and around the body that can be influenced to promote health and healing.

Energy-based therapies have been used to help our patients:

  • Reduce pain
  • Decrease stress
  • Lessen nausea
  • Promote relaxation
  • Facilitate sleep

Select nurses at Woodwinds have training in these therapies and the hospital also has a dedicated group of healing arts therapy volunteers. This service is available on most days.

Therapy sessions

A practitioner will come to your room for the 30- to 45-minute session. The process is supported by your efforts to deeply relax. While you remain fully clothed, the practitioner will gently touch your body and hold his or her hands slightly above your body to facilitate the clearing and balancing of your energy field. This “light touch” therapy has been very effective for both our patients and our staff.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a method of natural health care that originated in China more than 2,500 years ago. Today, it is used across the United States by both licensed acupuncturists and physicians trained as medical acupuncturists. Acupuncture may be used to strengthen your immune system and manage a variety of health conditions, including:

  • Pain
  • Headache/migraine
  • Morning sickness
  • Post-surgical nausea
  • Nausea after chemotherapy
  • Respiratory problems
  • Digestive discomfort or dysfunction
  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Endocrine imbalance

Acupuncture is often used as a complementary medicine, used together with conventional medicine. It is available on an outpatient basis and to hospital patients (with a doctor's referral).

According to traditional Chinese medicine, the body has an energy force called Qi (pronounced Chee) that must be balanced and free-flowing to maintain health. When the body's circulation of Qi is not in a balanced state, health can suffer. It is thought that acupuncture can help the body regain its flow of energy and energy balance.

Acupuncture involves inserting fine, sterile needles at precisely selected points on the body to redirect patterns of energy circulation. Each point has a demonstrated effect that has been clinically tested and documented over thousands of years in China. The needles are left in for between 10 and 40 minutes, with 20 minutes being the average time.

After acupuncture, patients often experience a calming effect and an improved sense of well-being — in addition to getting relief for their symptoms. Call 651-232-6830 to learn more or to make an appointment.
