Psychotherapy Services

Psychotherapy services

We offer psychotherapy to help individuals live valued and fulfilling lives following illness or injury. Our psychologists offer individual psychotherapy for adults and adolescents ages 13 and up, specializing in medical, health and rehabilitation psychology.

They can help you:

  • Cope with life and relationship changes related to medical conditions
  • Process thoughts and feelings about your medical conditions
  • Increase awareness of how thought processes and affect emotions and behaviors
  • Learn skills to help you achieve your goals
  • Develop healthier, more effective behaviors
  • Identify how you can increase your involvement in valued areas of life

We focus strongly on the mind/body connection, including the relationship between emotional symptoms (such as depression, anxiety, irritability) and medical conditions such as:

  • Brain injury (concussion, stroke, traumatic brain injury, tumor)
  • Post brain infection (following meningitis, encephalitis)
  • Movement disorders (Parkinson's disease, dystonia, Huntington's disease)
  • Dementia and memory loss (due to Alzheimer's disease or other conditions)
  • Other health concerns related to brain injury, movement disorders and memory loss

In addition to helping those with medical conditions, our psychologists offer individual psychotherapy for their caregivers. We assist them in adjusting to the significant challenges associated with these life-altering events.

What to expect at an appointment

You and your psychologist will work together to devise a treatment plan. Sessions typically last 45 to 50 minutes and usually occur weekly or biweekly. The total number of sessions will vary depending on your needs.

Our psychologists use many tools to help address your challenges, including techniques from:

  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Solution-focused psychotherapy
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
  • Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)
  • Mindfulness and meditation

Your psychologist may ask you to complete tasks outside of sessions. These tasks may be for information-gathering purposes or may be for you to practice using new psychological skills and techniques.
