Patient Story: Eric Fullarton

Eric Fullarton spent 2008 to 2009 in Iraq. He came home without a scratch. But on December 1, 2010, Eric fell 40 feet through a roof and landed on a concrete floor. His wife and girlfriend at the time, Jessica, remembers him "basically being in a coma" with lots of tubes and broken bones. She also remembers how difficult it was to explain to his two children. For the first five days, doctors weren't able to tell her Eric's chances for recovery. After two weeks in an intensive care unit, Eric was transferred to Bethesda Hospital where he spent two months recovering from his injuries, including severe brain trauma. Jessica remembers the moment she knew Eric recognized who she was, when he pointed to his ring finger and mouthed, "I'm sorry." Before his injury, they had been talking about getting married. Remembering this, Eric proposed again, barely able to speak and still in his halo. Eric and Jessica were married February, 25, 2011, just days after Eric left Bethesda Hospital.
