Patient Story: Donna Johnson |
|
Donna Johnson and her husband, Bruce, have been true partners during their 58 years of marriage. In October 2008, Donna aspirated during routine surgery and severely damaged her lungs. With Bruce by her side, she spent close to two months in that hospital's ICU, and then was transferred—while still on a ventilator—to Bethesda Hospital for 50 days. Donna was weak, with no muscle tone; even getting in and out of a chair was a major undertaking. Soon, however, she was weaned off of the ventilator. She worked non-stop with Bethesda's physical and occupational therapists to establish a new kind of normal life. And, with so much individualized attention, Donna has now been able to join her husband in walking, biking and other leisure activities.
